Become a Puppy Raiser!

Happy National Volunteer Week! We couldn't do what we do without all of our volunteers!

Have you considered becoming a Puppy Raiser for Dogs with Wings? Now is your chance! Today we are hearing from first-time Puppy Raisers, Sam & Kelsey, who are raising DWW Woody.
"Our first time puppy raising with Dogs with Wings has been an incredibly rewarding and fun experience. Our puppy, DWW Woody, has brought so much joy into our home and he is the most loving, funny little guy with a great temperament. We’ve loved watching him grow and develop new skills. DWW has provided us with training, support, and fostered a sense of community among all the volunteers. We love that DWW has such a great boarding program, so if you need a vacation (or a break), there is always another loving volunteer there to watch your pup. We’ve had such a great time puppy raising and we can’t wait to do it again."

Happy National Volunteer week to all of our amazing DWW Volunteers. Once again, as much as we would LOVE to celebrate in person, the pandemic is dictating we celebrate YOU virtually. Meet Rebecca, Our Grand Prairie Puppy Trainer

This year Dogs with Wings is celebrating our 25th anniversary and this week we are highlighting #NationalPuppyDay! Have you ever wondered what it's like to be a puppy trainer for Service Dogs? Meet our Grande Prairie Puppy Trainer, Rebecca!

"Growing up, I have always been taught that we are a community. Communities support each other. When I first joined Dogs with Wings as a volunteer, I saw an opportunity to use my skills in a meaningful way to help others. Dogs with Wings' mission of not charging clients for the Service Dogs they need, but fundraising instead as an organization, fit my core beliefs in giving back and supporting the community at large. The added benefit, of course, is getting to shape the lives of these amazing puppies in my job now as our Puppy Trainer in Grande Prairie. We create community and friendships while enjoying and sharing the accomplishments of these amazing, adorable, four-legged life changers. It’s fulfilling in so many ways. I’m so happy to have spent the last decade guiding puppy raisers and their puppies as they grow, learn, and give back."

Meet Dana, Our Calgary Puppy Trainer

"I started my journey at Dogs with Wings for two reasons. First, I had wanted a dog in my family’s life for a long time and I was more than ready to love a special furry little being. Second, I was raised to always care about the well-being of others and my late mother-in-law had always stressed how important volunteering was to her life and how amazing it is to give back. Well, I came across an advertisement posted for Calgary Puppy Raisers and I happily filled out an application! Now, 5 years later, I have puppy raised 3 pups that I will love forever and I was brought onboard to be our Puppy Trainer for Calgary and area. Dogs with Wings enhanced so much of what I value in life… compassion for others, community spirit, learning, friendships, fun, and most importantly puppies, puppies, and more puppies! Oh, and puppy snuggles!"

National Puppy Day! Meet our Puppy Trainers

This year Dogs with Wings is celebrating our 25th anniversary and this week we are highlighting National Puppy Day! Have you ever wondered what it's like to be a puppy trainer for Service Dogs? Meet our Edmonton & Red Deer Puppy Trainer, Chihiro!

"Ever since I can remember I've always had a passion for working with animals, specifically dogs. I've also always known that I wanted my career to be meaningful and focused on helping others. Training Service Dogs has been the best of both worlds, and I feel very grateful to get to do what I do. When I first started at Dogs with Wings, I worked mainly with our adult dogs, and that was such a wonderful experience. I soon fell in love with working with the puppies and I was lucky enough to be taken under the wing of our previous Puppy Trainer who taught me so much. There are many dog trainers who refuse to work with puppies, and it's not very hard to see why. They put everything into their mouth (including your hands - ouch!), they are loud, they have accidents all over your house, and they don't let you get a good night's sleep... and I love it! It's so much fun to watch them grow and see their different personalities develop. There are so many milestones within their puppy year, and I get to be a part of them all. Working with puppies has taught me so much about patience, consistency, and that all great things take time and hard work. Each time I get to see one of the puppies I trained go from a little blob of fur who doesn't even know their name yet, to a grown adult dog performing their job for their client, it brings everything full circle and reminds me why I do what I do."
