Dogs with Wings Assistance Dog Society (DWW) is a mighty non-profit agency that transforms the lives of individuals and social service agencies by providing highly trained Assistance Dogs to clients with specialized needs. We are currently seeking an Executive Director to lead our organization into its next phase of growth and impact. The ideal candidate will be a strategic thinker, an effective communicator, and a proven leader with a deep commitment to our mission. The Executive Director will be responsible for overall leadership and organizational management, working collaboratively with the board, staff, and external stakeholders to carry out the activities and programs in accordance with the strategic direction set by the Board of Directors.

The Executive Director will report directly to the Dogs with Wings Assistance Dogs Society Board of Directors.

Key Areas of Responsibility:

Leadership & Management:

  • Ensure adherence to and fulfillment of DWW’s mandate, vision, and mission;
  • Oversee DWW programming in accordance with the mission and vision of DWW and the strategic direction set by the Board of Directors;
  • Ensure rigorous program evaluation, and consistent quality of finance and administration, fundraising, communications, human resources, and systems; recommend timelines and resources needed to achieve strategic goals;
  • Actively engage and energize board members, committee members, partnering organizations and volunteers;
  • Support the Board of Directors: serve as ex-officio on each committee, attend and report/present at monthly board meetings;
  • Develop and implement operational policies and procedures for DWW to support the strategic direction and policies set by the Board of Directors.
  • Provide leadership and direction for staff and volunteers

Fund Development & Communications:

  • Expand revenue generating and fundraising activities to support existing program operations and to achieve other strategic objectives (i.e. acquisition, major/transformational gifts);
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships and collaborations with stakeholders, volunteers, and partners within the province;
    Develop and manage funding relationships with the City of Edmonton, the Government of Alberta, corporate sponsors, funders, donors, and other granting organizations;
  • Develop and manage the preparation of grant proposals and other materials to meet funder reporting requirements;
  • Develop a communications strategy that increases reach across all platforms
    Publicly represent DWW in speaking engagements, presentations, and media interviews; and
  • Oversee and manage the system and administration of a donor list and database, respecting the privacy and confidentiality of donor information.

Human Resources Management:

  • Determine the resource requirements, employee and volunteer, for the organization and for the delivery of programs;
  • Develop, review, and implement board approve human resource policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Develop, foster, and maintain a healthy, safe and positive work environment
  • Implement a performance management process for all staff, including monitoring the performance of staff on an ongoing basis, coaching staff to improve performance and performing annual performance reviews.
  • Hire staff to support the delivery of programs.

Financial Management:

  • Prepare and implement a Board approved annual work plan and budget in accordance with the Board’s strategic direction and policies;
  • Manage donor acknowledgements, tax receipts, and other funding recognition and engagement;
  • Manage financial resources in accordance with DWW policies and procedures and applicable legislation; responsible for accounts payables and receivables, bank reconciliations, and accounting records; and
  • Monitor and ensure the financial integrity of the organization.

  • Valid Alberta Driver’s license and reliable vehicle
  • Clean driving record.
First Year Measures of Success:

Success in the first year will be determined by the Executive Director’s ability to:

  • Act as a trusted and confidential advisor to the Board of Directors with respect to overall management of the organization; support board governance activities;
  • Diversify funding sources and fundraising efforts and develop an integrated communications and revenue development strategy;
  • Design a process to monitor, evaluate, and support the impact of DWW programs;
  • Define goals and parameters for staff and build metrics to evaluate and review success;
  • Enhance existing and develop and foster new relationships with key external stakeholders and donors; and
  • Increase organizational visibility and the awareness of DWW within the community.



Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, management, communications, or a related field. A Master’s degree is preferred.
  • Experience working in a leadership role with a non-profit organization and a Board of Directors in a non profit society.
  • Proven leadership experience managing programs, projects, and staff to achieve strategic goals.
  • Experience in developing and managing budgets is a requirement.
  • Experience developing and executing a fund development strategy is a requirement.
  • The ideal candidate will also have demonstrated experience with web and social media communication technologies.
  • Passion for, or experience with, dogs and/or the vulnerable sector is an asset.\
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office suite, TEAMS, and other online communications software.
  • working collaboratively with the board, staff, volunteers and external stakeholders.

  • Business acumen; understands prudent fiscal management;
  • Decisive; particularly comfortable dealing with ambiguity; conflicting priorities, etc.; not afraid to make the difficult decisions or have tough conversations;
  • Emotional intelligence; empathy and understanding of different priorities and viewpoints;

  • High energy and self-motivated with a results focus; flexibility and independence; and
  • Passion for the mission of Dogs With Wings.
  • Experience in working with and leading volunteers.
  • Working knowledge of Assistance Dogs International mission, vision, and values.  Well versed in the training of service dogs.


This is a permanent full-time term position with some irregular hours from time to time (evenings and weekends) around events and other activities.
